Re: (Conlangs) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here

Here are two articles about ongoing tonogenesis in Afrikaans and Seoul Korean . You could also check out Punjabi (tone) and Serbo-Croatian (pitch accent). In Mainland Scandinavian, pitch accent arose primarily from the contrast between mono- and polysyllabic words. Osc. axl > Sw. ˈaxel (shoulder) OS...

Re: How do you pronounce everyone else's nick?

I suppose a more relevant way of reviving this topic would be to use names of people that are active nowadays.

(And also to take the time to learn how they spell it. It's somewhat disheartening to see that about a third of the posts here containing my username have it wrong.)

Re: Forum News discussion/feedback thread

The board does have a poll feature, it's just never been enabled. My rationale behind this has been that a) polls are easily abused or turned into something annoying (like if you end up having lots of polls with dumb/simplistic/loaded questions), and b) polls don't really give any depth unless the p...

Re: The Quintessential 5th Conversation Thread

I understand the feelings regarding the ranks. Personally, I liked them too, and the system—that's why I made them in the first place! But in the end it got unsustainable, as Ossicone and sangi have said. As me and Ossicone were responsible for their awarding, we had to put a lot of time into lookin...

Re: Should Romanisations be "Necessary"?

I agree with elemtilas. It's nothing that should be required, but it's good practice, and a smart thing to do if you want more engagement. If there is no romanization, I'll be significantly less inclined to actually look at words and phrases to get a feel for the esthetic of the language, which lead...

Où pratiquez-vous normalement vos langues? Je vois tant de compétence linguistique ici sur le forum, mais généralement pas trop d'activité dans les fils où l'on peut les utiliser ici. Where do you guys usually practice your languages? I see so much linguistic competence here on the forum, but gener...

Re: The Quintessential 5th Conversation Thread

I never noticed this, but apparently you can type emojis by using two colons (at least that is what I get in my browser). : cat : → :cat: : gun : → :gun: : trophy : → :trophy: I discovered this when I was wondering why there was a cat instead of a Catalan flag icon in many old posts. This also expla...

I think Aszev would have to do the work on that one, but I'm sort of 50/50 on a "like" button as a feature. I actually PMed him a while back to bring this thread to his attention but he still didn't open the PM. Either he's flooded with messages or not around much. I'm not holding my breath for any...

Re: (L&N) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here

I would like to practise translating many natlang sentences regularly, because many people here speak that natlang. Should I spam the relevant thread in the "Other Languages Section" even if nobody replies with a correction, or the language practice thread in "Everything else", or is this better el...

Re: Yiddish

It has nothing to do with Slavic - exactly the same formation , once a perfect, is now the commonly used past tense in most varieties of colloquial German (I know what I am talking about as I am a native speaker of German). So the Yiddish periphrastic past is 100% German. Was about to say this. Mos...

Re: False cognates

en. scorch
fr. écorcher, ca. escorxar 'to skin'

I suppose the meanings aren't that close at a closer look, but the superficial similarity and the sense of damaging the surface of something made me believe they were cognates!

Re: Last word you learned in a foreign language

I checked Swedish word "lä", and dictionary gave Finnish word "lee", which must be a Swedish loan. I've never heard it. They seem to mean some kind of 'heaven'. Apparently it's lee in English as well! Its core meaning is 'place where there is no wind, shelter from wind'. In Finnish it appears to be...

Is this thread for discussing what linguistic books I have been reading? For such books and book-like things, and journal articles etc., especially ; but also for any sort of literature, whether fiction or non-fiction, peer-refereed or not, linguistics or not. That’s my understanding, at least. Thi...
