Re: Non-English Orthography Reform

Why does Piraha use x for [ʔ]? It rips my eyes. I would use q instead.

Re: Metal Thread

Metallists on a linguistics forum? Great. Can anyone phonologically explain me how to growl? [:P] Not to be off-topic: Eluveitie - Inis Mona Synthetic Flesh (actually not metal) I like Sonata Arctica, Dream Theater, Sabaton, Black Sabbath (which is not surprising as these bands are pretty famous) an...

Perception of time

http://www.businessinsider.com/how-different-cultures-understand-time-2014-5 This is pretty interesting article. You should also google term "Lewis model". I like the way how the perception of time mirrors in the vocabulary. Let's take a look at some of the slavic languages, for example Czech. minul...

Re: Tiwahelubasukeni / Tiwasukeni

1. B and H are the same pitch 2. You have got way too much redundace in vowels. In equal temperament (which is almost universal) flat of the higher tone or sharp of the same sound equally. Nonetheless, not every tone in a scale can be sharped or flatted. I recommend using 11 semitones in every octav...

Re: (Conlangs) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here

How can I normally (no copy-pasting and no Maor etc. keyboards) write special letters, like the macron ones? I tried Alt+number, but it only works up to 256 and first 32 are even not the same as in neither ASCII nor UTF-8.

Re: What are you listening to/watching?

I've heard a song several times in radio; it was probably hawaiian or at least very similar to hawaiian, but it was fast with almost no instruments. The voice was woman's. Did anyone heard about it? I can't find it anywhere.

Introflection in conlangs

I'm momentally fascinated by ablauts, apophony, triconsonantal root etc.
I wonder, does even someone implement those in their conlangs? I sometimes do, but it seems it's pretty rare among us.

Re: (L&N) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here

Do you have some links to quality arabic textbooks? Not as those stub bullshits on first page of Google, which, for example, often squeeze verbs to like 3 screens-heigths.
*heigth, of course, I always make this mistake.

Re: What happens when a language loses tone?

IMHO the tonegenesis can just reverse. High tones to unvoiced and low tones to voiced.

Re: favorite exant and extinct natlang

Extant: Arabic and other semitic langs. Its triconsonantal root is awesome.
Extinct: PIE, its ablaut looks very interesting. Also Ubykh, fortunately it's documented from a living person.
