Re: Apparently Old Prussian underwent the Great Vowel Shift

Ah, thank you for enlightening me. [:$] Either way, it occurred to me awhile after I posted that I should have noted Ser's argument still works.

Re: Apparently Old Prussian underwent the Great Vowel Shift

It seems a little easier to swallow once you learn that Late Latin underwent [a:] > [e:] into Old French (while short [a] was retained) That's not the way I learned it. French is like any other Romance language in that /a:/ and /a/ had merged by the Vulgar Latin stage. Vulgar Latin /a/ became /ɛ/ i...

I just read to the end, I'd love to participate if I can use someone else's page layout :)
I'd be willing to let you use mine. I'm not sure about the logistics of it, though, because I made my layout, such as it is, using the wonders of Microsoft Word.

I'll chime in to confirm I'm participating. Barring a new good idea, I'll be updating my Silvish article on saffron.

Moi aussi. Avant de faire du français je voulais faire un e langue un peu plus ésotérique, environ comme le q uechua, que mon université offre. Me too. Before taking French I wanted to take a little bit more esoteric of a language, like Quechua, which my university offers. Mais quand j'ai commencé ...

I really do think he had a great run. He's seemingly struggled the last couple of years, but it's the last few months that have made me think that he's reached the point of "too much". I've reached the point of no return, though, and I have to hope that the point at which I have chosen for his life...

E no olvidemus Sardinnia! And let's not forget Sardinia! Bien sûr que non ! Of course not! Il me semble que beaucoup de gens savent le français ici. It seems like a lot of people here know French. C'est une deuxième langue populaire. It's a popular second language. Perso, j'utilise le français parc...

Un jour ! J'aimerais aller au Monaco. Je ne parie jamais mais je trouve le pays tellement beau. Je doute que je puisse y aller ce semestre mais quand je reviendrai, j'irai en Silvie. [:D] One day! I'd love to go to Monaco. I don't gamble but I find the country so beautiful. I doubt I can go there t...

Re: (Conlangs) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here

Is anyone interested in trying another conlang magazine collab for 2020? (similar to this thread ) Note: If you are Dormouse559 or Vlürch, you are more than welcome to reuse your well-crafted materials ofc [:D] Certainly! I may just take you up on that offer. But if I get another good story idea, I...

In all honesty, I really do have to stop trying to rile people up I didn't know this needed to be said, but the Romanization game rules are permissive to promote creativity, not so you can take advantage of them for flamebait. Read through House Rule 2 at the top of this page if you need a reminder.

Re: What are you listening to/watching?

I started watching " The Good Place " on Monday. Got through the first three seasons by Thursday, and watched the fourth on Saturday before watching the series finale last night. Oh, oh man, the feels. It's been a long while since I've gotten into a series that I thought, during the finale, ran for...

A little bit of conculture that was on my mind yesterday, plus some related vocab: Silvia brings in a lot of revenue as an international skiing and snowboarding destination, but there's still a variety of outdoor activities in the summer months. They include hiking ( oûra [ˈuː.ʁa]), mountaineering (...

Re: A modern Faliscan descendant?

If Faliscan was a dialect of Latin like Bakkum claims it is then the descendant could descend from a dialect of Vulgar Latin / Proto-Romance with Faliscan features, but mutually intelligible with other Vulgar Latins. Well, that's different, but okay. If scholars generally accepted Faliscan as a dia...

Re: A modern Faliscan descendant?

Of course the result would be a separate language, I was just wondering whether it would be similar enough to the other Romance languages to be classed as one, or something much more different. Definitionally, the result wouldn't be a Romance language, since Romance languages are all descended from...

Re: (Conlangs) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here

What are some tips for avoiding this while generating vocabulary? A big thing is to look at how non-English languages have divided up the semantic space. A Conlanger's Thesaurus gives a lot of crosslinguistically common polysemies. With a quick scroll-through, I found a few listed as common that ar...

Re: Grimwulf's career change

It took a couple of days, but here's my translation. I'm experimenting with a somewhat altered version of Silvish. None of the Latin geminate consonants are inherited, though they do have an effect on vowel length (and geminates show up in borrowings). The orthography uses fewer hyphens in favor of ...

Really interesting how the girlfriend disappeared in both cases... […] And in Ring 2, turning into a spouse and then a family. First comes love, then comes marriage, then comes the baby in the baby carriage [:P] Look how "local guild" came full circle in Ring 2. It had become "local people's guild"...
