Re: Random phonology/phonemic inventory thread

I'm not sure about this, but I seem to remember that no languages distinguishing a front and a central /a/ is precisely the reason why no separate symbols for the two exist in IPA. However, a language that does distinguish them may have been discovered since the invention of the IPA. The Hamont dia...

Re: Forum News discussion/feedback thread

I have a trivial question because I have a rather healthy fascination for post counts. I joined the board in 2013 and am pretty sure I posted a sizeable chunk of my posts before Aug 2014. I’m therefore surprised that my post count still shows almost five thousand posts, which is where it was at befo...

Re: The Esseintial Ch’eweyõw̌e Blog

I’m going to revive this by posting two updates: 1. Lateral approximants are back in! There is a plain lateral and a glottalised one, i.e. /l lˀ/. Since a háček won’t comfortably sit atop an ell, I’m romanising these l l’ . The laterals do not cluster, unlike /j w/, and therefore constitute a separa...

Re: Quick question about plausibility

But the phenomenon that a morpheme has meaning X when appearing alone, and meaning Y when appearing alongside some other morphemes, do appear in languages, and it is a very interesting phenomenon and should be used more in conlangs. I cannot come up with an example ad hoc. I can give a relevant-ish...

Using ĺ is brave. I tried it once (I wish I remembered what for... oh, I remember! It was for accented syllabic laterals in one of the earliest sketches of Limestone), but I couldn’t make it work. It works quite well alongside ź . I like the word eeź and its relatives. Looking forward to reading abo...

What is the construction (both the syntax and the pronoun) called when a "redundant" pronoun is reduplicated/introduced in the same clause?

Example from my language:

Þe unts jes best mis.
"The dog he bit me."
ART.M dog-NOM.S 3SG.M bite-PRET.1.S 1SG.M
A resumptive pronoun.

Due to sonority hierarchy, it'd be likely for clusters with liquids to also be allowed in that case. What are your thoughts on that?
Since liquids do not occur in Ch’eweyõw̌e, this shouldn’t be a problem. [:D]
