Re: "Arrival" movie possible plagiarism?

Decoding an alien language is certainly a forethinkable plot. But the story I recall was the same even in the details of the language and orthography. It's mainly driving me insane that I can't recall the name of the story so I can find it again. I know I found it via a link in a thread somewhere. B...

"Arrival" movie possible plagiarism?

A while back, when I was active on this forum and in this hobby, I remember reading a story about linguists deciphering a strange, alien language written in a non-linear orthography. So imagine my surprise upon watching "Arrival" to see almost exactly the same story being told. Except the story I re...

Re: Distinctions and mergers in your conlang

Since I prefer creating concepts and it is boring to invent words xx - watch/see (TV, performance) xx - observe (keep seeing while something changes or until it changes. Guard and biologist do it.) xx - meet for the first time xx - meet (reunion) I also dislike lexigenesis. I really like the subtle...

Re: Manifest thought

I hate calling it a "language" because communication hasn't been purely lingual for thousands of years. Could you elaborate on this? "Language" has it's etymological roots in the Latin lingua meaning "tongue". This just doesn't seem suitable to me after thousands of years of written language, sign ...

After more than a year of stalking and asking billions of questions I think I've finally gotten to the point I'm prepared to start my language thread. Much of the delay was actually due to trying to sort out how to post the phonology. Which meant figuring out which symbols I needed for the sounds I ...

Re: (Conlangs) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here

Long answer: Your example sentence looks a bit odd. Most examples of case stacking, that I have seen are more of the form: Bob-ERG used Lisa-GEN-ACC Hammer-POSSD-ACC Bob used Lisa's hammer. However, there are several languages that distinguish between reflexive and non-reflexive possession, e.g.: B...

Re: (Conlangs) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here

Do any natlangs or conlangs stack noun cases? I have so many cases they tend to overlap. Since they can all be equally important to the semantics it isn't really possible to drop some. For instance; if I want to say, "Bob used his hammer" I'd need "Bob" to have both an agency tag and a possessor tag...

Re: Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious: The Game

I argue it's really two words and should be written "supercalifragilistic, expialidocious". [;)] super-cali-fragil-ist-ic ex-pi-ali-doci-ous I don't know any compounds with -ic right in the middle of them. -ic and -ous are both adjectival endings, so I say it's two adjectives. Also because the c is...

Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious: The Game

The game is simple... we all know the word... but how does it parse? In any language, even one just made up specifically to parse this nonsense.

I'd start it off, but I'm not the creative type.

I'm mostly annoyed by the seemingly epidemic proportion of people who simply never keep going long enough to get to that sweet spot where you have done enough work that starting over is not an option. But then I'm just projecting my own goals and reaping the frustration. Speaking strictly for mysel...

Superclasses and subclasses of colors, fruits and animals. read (read the text, read the text of a book) vs. read (read a book, which contains text) Some cases lead to more distinctions that do not have the original meaning: come, go, leave (get out), leave (do not prevent something from staying in...

Re: I swear my conlang is becoming a relex of Ithkuil

Actually, the raspberry makes me think of Calvin & Hobbes, where it frequently appears as "PPHHHBBBT" or something like that. And muchas gracias for the awesome compliments on Kankonian! Ah! Calvin & Hobbes. Great American literature there. For a while, my wife and I used raspberries as a substitut...

Re: I swear my conlang is becoming a relex of Ithkuil

Heh, that looks like my Kankonian grammar. It makes it absolutely unambiguous as to how each sound is pronounced. Do you have it posted somewhere? I'm all about unambiguous. Sure. http://khemehekis.angelfire.com/basic.htm Danke. And any language that has the raspberry in its phone inventory needs t...

Re: I swear my conlang is becoming a relex of Ithkuil

Well, the phonology of what appears to be the most recent form of Ithkuil doesn't look too bad. Looking on Wikipedia, it looks like the 2004 version was more out there though. Personally, I'd love a relexed Ithkuil. Other than the absurd phonology and the even more absurd orthography I am a huge fan of Ithkuil. Noun cases are your friend. Embrace the case! Well, the phonology of what appears to be the most recent form of Ithkuil doesn't look too bad. Looking on Wikipedia...

Re: (Conlangs) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here

Has anyone ever used TAM particles? I'm thinking of using them for my language rather than conjugating verbs. That way TAM info could be optional if context made it redundant. All the necessary inflection could take place on the particles. I'm also thinking of conjugating verbs for subordinance. Jus...
