Re: Iramite of the Pillars - Progeny of a Lost Semitic

If this was even half as confusing for you all to read as it was for me to write I apologize and implore that you ask questions and point out better ways to organize things. I like what you're doing but, yes, that was kind of confusing. I might have: split the case irregularities and QRPS stuff int...

Re: Iramite of the Pillars - Progeny of a Lost Semitic

I really like the phonation chain shift! Is that kind of change attested in any Semitic natlangs?

Re: Speedlanging weekend V: 22th April

Wow, I didn't see this at all and was very busy this weekend. Wish I'd thought to check here. But I might come up with something for it this week, maybe on the plane Thursday or Saturday.

Re: Speedlanging weekend IV: Weekend of April 8th

I decided to pull out an old conworld that I haven't done anything with in 3 years and build my first conlang for it. This is Sîmăr Tedasu , a language spoken by a semi-aquatic/amphibious group of humanoids living on and around an island chain in a brackish subtropical inland sea. Phoneme inventory ...

Re: (Conlangs) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here

I'm not an expert on direct inverse languages specifically (although someday...) but I think it would be very easy for a situation like that to develop using a word for "things" as the 3rd person plural pronoun. Your direct/inverse marking examples seem a bit quirky to me because I'm used to inverse...

What language does Google think this obscure natlang is?

Inspired by this thread over on the conlangs board , I became curious how Google Translate determines what language an unknown text is, and started to put in random samples of obscure (or obscure-ish, or sometimes just misleadingly transcribed) natlangs from the Guess The Language thread into Google...

Re: (L&N) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here

Those are some very interesting questions and I'd love to know the answer myself. Sadly the Universals Archive really doesn't have much at all on direct-inverse marking, obviation, or hierarchical alignment. However, I can answer a couple subquestions (a3 and c4) with a counterexample. Sochiapan Chi...

Re: Location Words and "To Be?"

That's when I came up with the idea of turning the relational nouns into possessives. So instead of saying, "The book is under the table," one would say, "The book belongs to the table's underneath, or "the book is the table's underneath's." (Lit. book-table-abovepossesivenounis) (I may or may not ...
