Re: Sun Speech (Isidriè), and its script - Scratchpad

This "opposite gender" function is called gender polarity. Akkadian does it with numbers. D'oh - Of course! Numerical gender polarization also happens in Arabic, Hebrew and Aramaic. [:(] It's a shame I don't have grammatical gender in my :con: Rozwi , or I would have burgled this idea. I especially...

'I graced Kahichali with a new phoneme'. I feel like that sentence needs a top hat and a monocle it's so fancy. Completely sidestepping the point of why I brought this sentence out of nothingness. [->] From a native speaker's point of view, Is it correct English, or incorrect English? BTW, I wear g...

Re: Brahmic Scripts

I have been developing fonts for two closely-related descendants of Brahmi formerly used in Turkestan: Tocharian and Khotanese. http://www.vgfun.net/lee/langpage/scripts/other/toch-khot-table.png I'm also eventually planning to submit a proposal to Unicode for Tocharian. Unicode already has a propo...

Re: Opposite Words Having A Link

1) How do you turn a word consisting of only one vowel into its opposite? 2) How about non-permitted consonant clusters? 3) The brain doesn't seem to be very good at doing this without *lots* of training, which makes it unlikely for kids to acquire it in any generalized sense. 4) How about words th...

Re: (L&N) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here

What Teddy is getting across is that, even though a character is an abstract creation, native speakers of English do not refer to them in objective literary works as an 'it'. In academic literature, characters are referred to by their gender, with some notable exceptions (e.g. Moby Dick the White Wh...

Ahzoh,

IMHO there are more than a handful (two hands-full?) of English words with an Arabic, Hebrew, even Coptic/Egyptian (ultimately) origin that you could possibly do 3cons. reconstructive relexing. [:P]

Re: Sun Speech (Isidriè), and its script - Scratchpad

Hey Redovas! Just a quick clarification: A noticeble trend is the tendency to assign objects and animals the gender opposite of those who would traditionally use or be associated with them. Culturally, a male sailor would see his ship as feminine, while a female musician would characterize her instr...

Re: Opposite Words Having A Link

I kind of have this sort of thing in Rozwi. there are two prefixes *vu- (absence of, opposite of) *nu- (plain negative) What's the difference? Well, originally they were used in this way: nu+ya'al (love) = to not love love someone, but possibly to like someone vu+ya'al = to enact the opposite of lov...

Re: Opposite Words Having A Link

In the early stages of Rozwi, I did an incomplete reversal (metathesis) of the consonants in the verb in order to make the Subjunctive: yebe 'to be' :: bieye 'may be' <SBJV> xetē 'to know' :: tiexe 'may know' <SBJV> gēdæl 'to object' :: diegel 'may object' <SBJV> This only remains in a handful of ve...

Re: Wordbuilding

I went through a big phase of similar word-building in Rozwi . At the moment I like this method. The words "feel" more real, and it forces you to be creative with new building. What method do you use now to wordbuild? - It still happens, I cannot avoid it. - I also use word-generators now. Hey, it'...

Or it could be pieces of an amulet that fit together and press into a relatively shallow keyhole, like a missing dial or knob. Then you rotate it, again, like a knob or dial. I think like the same principle as the key for the Book of Amun-Ra in the movie The Mummy . CAVEAT: Be sure that the lock isn...

Re: What did you accomplish today?

I decided to get rid of the uvularized /s z/ in my phonemic inventory. Too difficult to pronounce. They ended up sound like sequences of /sX/ and /zX/. Also, I came up with a weird sentence: čak čadad čar-jīmnatam some cow-PL PST=run-JUSS-PL some cows had to run. The sentence is almost alliterative...
