Re: Language practice thread

我和我女朋友今晚打算去看一部电影叫Prometheus。 Tonight my Girlfriend and I plan to go see a movie called Prometheus. No hablo chino bien, entonces vamos en espanol. Yo si fui a ver Prometeo hoy. Me agrada la pelicula. I don't speak chinese well, so let's give it a go in Spanish. I went to see Prometheus today. I lik...

Re: Anglish Spamthread

I saw "Forethought" today. I liked it well enough. The tale was much like unto "Elsewight", but with new twists. I was dumbstruck that Ridley Scott put Schleicher's (Ewe and Horses) tale into it. Wonderful! I want not to give too much away.

Re: (Conlangs) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here

Would it be naturalistic (or even plausible) to have the particles modifying a verb their own separate word? Noun -- particles -- verb Or seen more defined: sub. -- past.ind.sub. -- root I know these are sketchy examples at best, but bear with me, please. Dear Thaen, I'm hitching on late here. But ...

Re: (L&N) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here

[quote="smrk"]Does anyone know of a quick-and-dirty heuristic sort of thing that I can tell my ESL students about when you can use "'s" as a genitive marker? I had an issue today with one of them over the phrase "Prague's center". [quote] I don't know a quick and dirty heuristic thing, but I did a q...

Re: (L&N) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here

Dear Natlangers: This was originally a conscript question, but since most languages have some sort of writing system attached to it, I believe I can pose the question here, also. Specifically it deals with classifying writing systems by direction. Is "boustrophedon" the only name for a specific writ...

Re: (Conlangs) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here

Dear Conlangers: This is a conscript question. Specifically it deals with classifying writing systems by direction. Is "boustrophedon" the only name for a specific writing system's direction? Do any (nat/con)languages have specific names for, say, vertical writing that starts from the left, vertical...

QUOTE: " I've read a paper purporting to have proven a connection, the only problem is, as I've actually shown in my Anglo-Sumerian counterhypothesis, that the connections could still be by chance." That very idea was shown to me by an old prof of mine years back. He was a Juggernautical force with ...

Re: Conworlding ideas that you later realized wouldn't work.

[first, excuse the no diacriticals, accentos ni tildes] Castellano es "espannol". Cuando yo vivia en el Peru, a los peruanos no les gustaba llamar el idioma que hablaban "el espannol". Tuvo un conotativo..em.. imperialista, por decir. Al contrastar (y separar) el idioma de los conquistadores, los pe...

Re: Possession, instrument and location in zero marking lang

I was talking about "proto-language" in another thread, and it reminded me of some things that may bring to bear on an extreme, aggro-remix form of zero-marking. If the language has discrete one-word uttrerances for concepts like "this place here", "that place there", that helps some. Koko the Goril...

It's Ukrainian. I cheated using polskified roman letters:

So your sleuthing was correct!

[O.O] Impressive resources!

Well, if the latest US Census can count more than one ethnicity, conlang-ethnographers should be able to at least, whether the cloth is cashmere, loden or homespun!

Re: (Conlangs) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here

Dear Any and All: Janko Gorenc has this enormous trove of info about probably a friggintillion of conlangs, namely, the numbers 1-10. We all know this. This is one of the fundamental axioms of Thermo-Glossopoetics, around which we base our lives and conjugate our verbs, make our Swadesh Lists, and o...

Dear Systemzwang: NICARAGUAN SIGN LANGUAGE comes close to answering the initial question, closer than most. Dear Eldin R.: I read your post about: "But sometimes I've realized two or more ideas couldn't possibly work together. " This reminded me of a similar quandry faced by A. K. Dewdney (and other authors, no doubt), when he wrote The Planiverse. He actually recruited the snail-mail the help of many mat...

Re: Avjunza, Micamo & the Island thing

Hi Avjunza: I read your post. I really like Micamo's suggestion. We need more "mutliple sun" representation in sci-fi/fantasy lit! Another suggestion came to me when I was talking about Edgar Rice Burroughs in another post. It's too much to explain here, so here's the ERBzine link http://www.erbzine...
