Re: False friends and other unfortunate coincidences

I was new in Germany, had a job, and a lady told that a guy came with full 'carajo' down the street, and i asked myself what she ment with it, since she seemed to be a quite decent lady, and for me what she was saying was that the guy came with a "full penis" down the street. 'Carajo' is for me a p...

Re: CBB Conlang Relay IX

The whole town does some external inclusivity during the morning twilight mist. That being said, how about a new relay, guys? When would it be? I might be able to hurry up and get K'otê to a level where I could participate. I'd love to host it, but I'm on vacation for the entire September. So eithe...

Re: Lexicon milestones

I feel like Khemehekis has killed this thread - no offense at all, but every small achievement pales in comparison to this incredible amount of vocabulary that Kankonian has. [:(] That being said, I'm still proud of Caelian that has finally reached the 1,000 word mark. The 1,000st word is the root *...

Re: False friends and other unfortunate coincidences

Found another structual one:

:eng: all but
:deu: alles außer (everything except)

In a sentence like "nowadays, smoking in restaurants is all but forbidden", if you translate it too literally into German it sounds like smoking in restaurants is everything, but not forbidden.

Re: Caelian - a new Conlang by Iyionaku

Ranking of objects for verbal inflection As described before, Caelian inflects after subject and object of a noun. A speciality of the Caelian declension is that the object needn't necessarily be the direct object, but all other objects and adverbials can be used too. It is not arbitrary though, an...

Re: The CBB Conlang Census

As Caelian has finally reached the mark of 1,000 words I'd like to add it to the conlang census. Bath'aso and Paatherye both stagnate at about 800 words so I don't want to add them as for now. Caelian (2014) - agglutinative/fusional, nonconcatenative, large phoneme inventory (29 consonant phonemes, ...

It is most definitely "貓" which Google Translate says is cat. (Not sure if you know this, but Google and other translators have a handwriting option so that you can literally write the character and pick from a list of approximations that best fit what you wrote. It is an awesome feature for determ...

Sorry for derailing btw And i dont feel this is something regional, it just seems that germans havent found a clearly preferred word so far... Re: False friends and other unfortunate coincidences

Stumbled across this one: :deu: Postbote - postman :lux: Bréifboîte - postbox It may not be immediately clear why this is a false friend. But in German, you could also say "Briefbote" and even though the word does not exist everyone would understand that "Postbote" is meant. So when I stumbled acros...

呼啸:the component characters kind of tell you where you're going with this verb (海啸 is a tidal wave). Wuthering Heights is translated into Chinese as 呼啸山庄, so we can translate 呼啸 as the obscure "wuther". Oops, well that's what the dictionaries don't tell you. I literally browsed MDBG and looked for ...

Re: False cognates

:fin: ilma - air :isl: ilma - to smell pleasant It looks to good not to be true, but apparently they are really not related. The Finnic word is of Proto-Uralic origin and I doubt that there are too many Uralic loanwords in Icelandic, let alone ones that have maintained their original form so well.
