Re: Quick Diachronics Challenge

Qwed is actually closer, lol, but still not quite right. HINT : The proto-form has an initial that has an MOA only evident from one single reflex. The protoform wouldn't be * tlemat or * dlemat , would it? If this is definitely not it, and if my original guess was closer, then I'll stick with my fi...

Here's my submission!
Spoiler:

Edit: Here's a much smaller version. It's still pretty big, but hopefully it's more manageable.

Re: Funny Speech Quirks and More!

Another interesting tick, which would happen to me very often, was that this guy who was once a really good friend of mine would switch the beginning consonants of two words, especially if they were compounds and proper names, like some sort of strange metathesis. This is known as Spoonerism , and ...

Re: Funny Speech Quirks and More!

Hm, never noticed that was a thing in English until now, had to think about that for a second. Is it the voicing that stretches the length, or is it to distinguish it further from otherwise homophone counterparts (eg. "back" vs. "bag" and "sat" vs. "sad") or would it be a bit of both? I'm not very p...

Re: Funny Speech Quirks and More!

I'm from North Florida so to me everyone down there sounds like shit even if your English is probably even more correct [:P] Now, I would fight you on that, but you're probably right, we can't even speak Spanish right! Stupid debuccalization, plaguing the minds of the youth and making them sound li...

Re: Funny Speech Quirks and More!

@qwed Hm, interesting. I've never heard anyone pronounce it like that, for it would be registered as "Guh" /ˈgəːʔ/ to most listeners not expecting it to come out that way, no? I live in Miami, so a lot of people here with thick accents pronounce it either /'guːd/ or /'guːʔ/ or even /goːd/. Now I won...

Funny Speech Quirks and More!

I've thought about sharing this in the past, so why not a better time than now: I have two siblings with autism, they're both pretty high in the spectrum; my sister is more talktative than my brother, who can speak, mind you, but he's regressed a bit after not having an intimate speech therapy sessi...

Re: Speedlanging weekend IV: Weekend of April 8th

Inkcube, I absolutely feel for you! At least you got two nice sketches out of it :) Do you have a phonological break down of the second language? I think it is awesome you were channeling Sumerian. That is actually one of the prime influences for this challenge and has interested me lately. Also, i...

Re: Speedlanging weekend IV: Weekend of April 8th

So I screwed up. again! I read the first page of another thread as if it were the actual challenge for this year, and posted mine over there! I completely overlooked the dates, I just wanted to participate, and went to work for 3 hours and 40 minutes for two speedlangs...each. felt pretty bummed and...

Ech gadochte obër dar Loft ont hü dar Wolkonë sent ols Haundën ont Faucholën. /εx gadɑxtə obər dar lɔft ɔ̃t hy dar vɔlkɑ̃nə sεnt ols haundən ɔ̃t fauxolən/ This is pretty tough, at least in my opinion, since it's a longer sentence… is it "I thought about the air and X the clouds X out of dogs and X"...

Re: Quick Diachronics Challenge

I really like how that tree came out! I couldn't set enough time for myself to fully map out the stages and changes of the protoword, but seeing like this really adds a whole new dimension to these challenges, and gives me quite a few ideas. Congrats, sangi39 for getting the protoform right!

I'd like to join! Are the rules going to be the same or are they different every speedlang contest?
