What are you listening to/watching?

What can I say? It doesn't fit above, put it here. Also the location of board rules/info.

I've started watching the second season of Stranger Things, finally. I am loving it. I'm not normally much of one for horror/scary movies and shows, but Stranger Things is different for me. I think perhaps because it's not so much about shock and gore like a lot of horror movies seem to be, but rather a subtle, creeping fear. (and a lot of the scary stuff doesn't come from the supernatural and monsters--it comes from very real things like family problems, isolation, and feeling that you can't trust anyone) The show gives me the most incredible goosebumps.

Also, I love all the characters. Even the ones I don't like that much are interesting and "real" to me. The best character is, of course, Steve's hair, but I like all the other main characters too.

I'm four episodes in to season 2, and it's interesting to notice the differences between this season and the last one. In the last one, a lot of the horror and drama came from the unknown--nobody knew what was going on or that the supernatural existed, so they just never could put the pieces together until the end. In this season, they all have that context, so the horror comes more from the fact that they very much know what's causing all the weird stuff--and they rightfully fear it. The fear stems from a different place, and that's interesting.

^I ended up enjoying Season 2 more than the 1st. [:)]

What I'm listening to:

This Welsh song, "Dacw Nghariad". I don't think I realized just how beautiful Welsh was until now.

I just finished up N. K. Jemisin's Broken Earth trilogy. It's good, and I recommend it. I rather hope the third book wins the Hugo for Best Novel this year.

Extreeemely creepy IMHO. A remake of The Birds needs to include some birds luring humans to their doom with calls like this.

I was also hoping that the raptors in Jurassic Park/World would be able to mimic human speech to lure them to their doom. But that would be improbable at best

Birds are freaky luzzil dinos!

Nice. I just started The Fifth Season. I haven't quite caught onto the world yet but I'm definitely intrigued.

That was awesome, thanks for the tip!

I've been watching Neko Zamurai and listening to the theme from Neko Zamurai as it endlessly loops in my head at all hours of the day. And also Fringe and the new Dessa album.

I think the way she does worldbuilding is pretty good, though I have Opinions about the linguistic aspects of things, but I shan't share them until you've finished the trilogy :)

Thanks for responding! I'll watch that John McWhorter youtube thing you linked to.

I have been listening to and reading as many translations and "translations" of Gloria Gaynor's "I Will Survive" as I can.
My favorite so far is Dunja Rajter's "Ich Uberlieb's". (Sorry, no time for umlauts!)

Do you ever listen to songs that perhaps contain nonsensical lyrics, yet it's not their meaning that matters, but the sound of the words?

I'm thinking of this excellent song I can't stop listening to, "Toes" by Glass Animals. I'm fairly certain that much of the lyrics are just gibberish, especially the line:

"See the snake-baboon: Funky, chic and smooth"

But there's something in the sound of the lyrics, all the lengthened rhyming /u/ sounds that make this song so appealing to me. There needn't always be a "meaning" to the lyrics I enjoy.

These guys are a complete piss. With over the top production values. They had me at "Seagulls" and "Bushes of Love".

Tarkin sounds like the male lead singer from The Human League, and I don't care if I'm showing my age.

I am not so sure that the Library of Babel contains the phrase "A Quail and a Rubber Beak are beautifully unique"

Music needs more Bowiesque nonsense sense for the rambling outré.

Misheard/Mishearable lyrics are 2x the fun, IMHO.
