What languages do you speak?
What languages do you speak?
Alright, some people have been showing this in their signatures for quite some time, but why not make a thread for it? Post the languages you know and how well. It'd be nice to see who speaks what and maybe find people who wanna practice or help with a language you're interested in!

Kinda embarrassing, but I will be participating in the TAC 2011 over at unilang, so hopefully this list will look a bit better in a year :D. The languages I will be studying for the next year are Japanese, Greek and Latin. I might, and probably will, replace Latin with Spanish though.

Re: What languages do you speak?
It is basically the same as my signature.
I have a hard time quantifying how well I know a language. What some people consider one thing I consider another. :/
Native
Conversational
Intermediate (Inyauk - I'm getting to the point where I can think of sentences directly without translating.)
Elementary (I don't know anyone who speaks German, so it's faded pretty fast.)
Learning (I'm currently taking a speaking class, but I don't know much.)

I seem to've forgotten most of my Spanish.

Milya, you say you're "basic" at English but honestly you speak it much better than a lot of so-called native speakers.
Sadly, English is the only one on me. No matter how much I study I can't break past the "few words" barrier on any language.

I am effectively a monoglot. My pronunciation is very good, though. :-D

I speak English perfectly, 'cos I'm English.
I'm learning German in School (love it :D)
And I've learnt Dutch. Wrong. But oh well.
I also plan to learn Japanese soonly :3
New lines ftw.

Re: What languages do you speak?
When I was in the Air Force back in the 60's I was a German/English interpreter and I was told by several native Germans that I spoke it very nearly like a native.
However, after not having the opportunity to use it for the last 45 years I'm afraid I've forgotten more than I ever knew, although I can still get the general idea of what's being said in a German movie.
BTW: I'm reminded of a friend of mine who escaped from Communist Czechoslovakia when he was a young teen. After forty years of speaking nothing but English he finally got the chance to go back and visit family in his homeland. When he arrived, however, he suddenly discovered that he couldn't remember how to speak a word of his native language!
So learning a language is NOT like riding a bicycle. You CAN forget how to do it.

So you're a monoglot again.

:gle: Beginner

I would say beginner, because there are still some concepts which I struggle with, although I can use all of the languages fairly more adroitly than the usual beginner.

Re: What languages do you speak?

I used to consider myself intermediate in both French and Latin, but I've lost a lot of it in the last few years. I've revived my French studies recently, so maybe I can get a little better. I also know a little German, Russian, Dutch, and Polish - but not enough to be proud of. I could possibly be conversational in German if the speaker spoke slowly and clearly. I also have extremely basic knowledge of Haitian Creole and Pashto.
