The sidequest to the casino planet does seem a bit... or a lot... random.

But I do think it's important thematically, and if it or something like it hadn't been in the movie, it would've been missing something. It's the only part of the movie that shows something beyond either the Resistance/First Order or Luke being a hermit. It's the only part of the movie that shows people who honestly don't have a ton invested in either side; they may well prefer one side over the other, but they aren't an active part of either. And, obviously, it ties in with the theme of the spark that lights the fire--Finn and Rose showing up sparks the stable kids to release the not!horses, and it's strongly hinted that they're going to inspire the Force-sensitive kid--as well as the theme of Luke not being the last Jedi.

I wish it had been integrated into the rest of the movie better (and have more of an impact on the film's conclusion), and the not!horses are kind of... bizarre, but I don't think the planet could simply be excised without losing something important. So, I have mixed feelings on that whole segment.

The Canto Bight story line seems like a wedged-in side quest, but I'd agree that it does fit in thematically, hope coming from unexpected places, things not as being as black and white as the earlier films showed us, failure on the part of the "good guys", and so on.

So it's not this random chase scene for the sake of a chase scene, but something that was a whole lot more, just not fit into the film very well.

So, watching TFA and TLJ one after the other, thinking on the "revelation" of Rey's parentage
Spoiler:
(which could easily have been manipulation on the part of Kylo Ren simply using what Rey might have felt about her parents, but anyway)... So what? Anakin's mother was literally a slave, bought and sold amongst the Hutts and Watto. Sure, Anakin's parentage was never built up in the same way, but other that Shmi being his mum, nothing was ever confirmed about where he came form. The story told to him about Darth Plagueis is often used to suggest that he was born of the Force under the control of the Sith, but it's never been confirmed. Neither has the fact that Anakin was the Chosen One, only that he was believed to be the one referred to in the prophecy by Qui-Gon Jinn (we're not even sure Yoda believed it, given his "a prophecy that misread could have been" line). Obi-Wan seems to have believed it, especially in ROTS, but it's not something that's ever been confirmed.

So I guess, if Rey does come from "nothing", so what? Beyond the build up in TFA, her backstory isn't hugely different from Anakin's (whose fully backstory we similarly don't understand). Maybe Anakin was just extremely Force-sensitive, not the Chosen One. Maybe Rey is the Chosen One. Maybe the entire "prophecy" thing is something the new films will lead into "open to interpretation" territory.

Random thoughts for the night [:)]

Wow -

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E9GRYa_3gno

And this was in 2015 (!?) How did this sneak under my radar????!?

My dream of an Æon Flux animé style Star Wars creeps ever closer (and not that new series with the weird Transformers Beast Wars style of animation [}:(] ).

PS:

The Imperials can shoot and hit !

Saw the teaser.
Saw the title for Episode 9

[O.o] ~ [D;] .

Two spoileryish thoughts:

Spoiler:
[->] So it will be revealed that the "Skywalker" will have been the Sith's attempt to have a Sith version of the Force Ghost. This was the "next step" for Plagueis' life-extension death-cheating experiments. JJ is going to flesh this idea out, and we get to see some of Palpy once agayne. Whether Palpy was to have used their body as a host, or to have somehow tagged along/followed their Force-scent into the Netherworld of the Force, Palpy will have found a way to tread the skies (i.e. Netherworld of the Force); thus he'd become a 'Skywalker'.

[->] So Luke will rise or ascend to his new role as "The Skywalker" : a sort of Forceghost Policeman, patrolling the nooks and crannies in and between the Netherworld of the Force and 'The Galaxy' for incursions of Force-Malevolences, or Sith Force Ghosts, such as (mayhap) Palpy.

You all might appreciate this--the latest argument I've seen against The Last Jedi is that it has a planet with salt on the surface. I'm not entirely clear why someone thought a salt planet was the last straw, but I'm delighted they've provided me with the silliest argument yet to "prove" The Last Jedi is bad.

Totes food for thought~
Spoiler:
Rey could be a delayed/postponed Sith-planned Vergence in the Force (¿?) and thus very much a nobody/nowhere woman/Ulixean «nemo» . :wat: :wat:

Or worse, a kind of living Sith horcrux, a vessel that was meant to host the Force-ghost of Plagueis or Palpatine… not meant have a life of her own.

I know Luke seems a lot younger here than in the movie sequels, but…

**sigh** Shame they couldn't have used novels as more of a roadmap.
