Haven't designed the military flags yet. Not sure what I want to do.
I think this thread is for Earthling flags. You should make a thread in "Conworlds" subforum [:D]

I like the flag of Qatar. I like the nuance of red, and it's simple but yet distinct design.

Image

The flag is notable for its proportions of 11:28, which makes it the only official national flag that's more than twice as long as it's high.

The flag of Niue is a bit special: based on the classical British ensign pattern, but an unusual yellow colour instead of the common blue or red ones.

Image

I've been thinking of having it's design as a base for one version of the Leopardish/Waku flag – but instead of the Union Flag I will have the regular blue Leopard Flag in the canton.

I've always thought the flag of South Africa was pretty cool. The various colors are quite pleasing to me.

You really do? Whilst I do not have anything against it, it is a bit too out there to work for me, even though the colors fit perfectly. About that, if my eyes don't deceive me, that's actually burgundy rather than red.

Is it too much to ask for to see the text replaced by "POLAND"? There are even six letters in both.
Macedonia's flag has long intrigued me. It could work just as well as an emblem and pretty much screams of power and might, not despite of its relatively simple design, but because of it.

Not gonna lie, Maryland's is one of my least favorites, I find it rather garish.
Washington's isn't much better though, although I like the green.

To each his own. A matter of differing tastes, I suppose - I rather like a vivid color scheme.
For curiosity, what are your favorites?
Just remembered about this forum two years later, and it just so happened this thread popped back up.
New Mexico's flag gets kicked around a lot as an example of a good flag, so maybe I'm not having the most original thought here, but it's still pretty rad.

Yes, New Mexico's flag is cool. Also, Maryland's flag is infinitely better than Washington's flag, even though I'm not sure it's objectively good (it would look cool as a shield with a lion or eagle holding a sword on it at least).

You mean something like this?

The arms of the Barons of Baltimore.

The sun in New Mexico's flag reminds me of the Picaflor de Nazca (Nazca Hummingbird)

Which IMHO would be an awesome symbol for a flag or banner.

I wouldn't have really drawn the leopards like that, but yes.

A stylistic complaint, surely!

There are certainly other slightly differently drawn versions out there. Here, you can see some (I think) better executed versions. Not only of early arms, but also the modern arms of Marlyand, the seal and so forth. I don't think there's any other US state whose arms are actually British heraldry. Kind of cool that.

It's said to be a hummingbird.

Some kind of bird, at the very least.

Actually, not quite!

Washington DC derives its flag from the crest of the Washington family: http://dcwalkabout.com/blog/george-wash ... t-of-arms/ While I don't think it necessarily "inspired the American flag", it certainly is the source for the DC flag!, which you can see fluttering in the upper right corner of the page.

The flag of East Frisia is my all time favorite. Not the one with the stupid coat of arms though.
