A Podcast about Conlangs

Post by Ollock » 17 May 2011 17:42

<crosspost from zbb>

For a while now I have been considering starting a podcast about conlanging and conlangs. The LCS podcast is very slow to update and really doesn't have the feel I want from a podcast, and I don't know of any other podcasts on the subject. My concept was a standard discussion show with two or three hosts and several segments. I'm trying to recruit one host now, but he seems uninterested. In any case, here is the layout of segments I have come up with:

Conlangery: Choose a conlanging topic to discuss each week. Should be general topics involving construction, promotion, use, aquisition, etc., or maybe something about conlanging subculture. Possible topic ideas: getting started conlanging, using conlangs in fiction, learning to speak your conlang, presenting your conlang to the world, types of conlangs, etc.
Natlang feature of the week: Exactly what it says on the tin. Each week we choose a natlang feature to discuss for inspiration. Listener submissions welcome.
Conlang of the week: Again, exactly what it says on the tin. Probably should look for audio samples along with grammar materials ahead of time.

If anyone here has suggestions, I'm open to them. I am not entirely familiar with the technical aspects of podcasting (what recording program to use, how to feed in Skype if I need to, etc.) and as I said before, I may need a cohost. Also, since I and whatever cohost(s) I find can't be expected to know everything on natlangs and conlangs, suggestions for segment topics are welcome.

This really makes me miss the old skype days. :-|

It does sound like an interesting idea though.

Wow, this is coming together pretty fast. One thing I may need is some intro and outro music. If there's anyone out there musically inclined that would like to contribute, send me a PM.

I've never actually heard a voice speak about Conlanging.
I'd love to listen to this every week or so.

What would a hypothetical audience want from such a program?

Hypothetical? Uh, look at the signature on the first post. Also look at the date on the first post. That podcast has been going on for years already (and in fact is how I found these forums).

I am aware of it, yes. I was hinting that I would like to attempt the same but with my own spin.

It was non-obvious from that that that was what you were trying to imply. Why do you want to create a new podcast anyway?

How about the role of G.S.D. (Gender and Sexual Diversities) in glossopoesy? There tends to be a lot of non-cisgender, non-heterosexual people in this hobby.

I wonder if there is an Afrihili community, so I can interview them about their thoughts on Eurocentric auxiliary languages.

Conlangery had a story about Afrihili once. I think there was some heavy researching going on.

Having heard the discussion in question, the research was scant. But you can't fault them because the resources on the language are scant. There was a very limited printing of Ni Afrihili Oluga, so it should surprise nobody that this PDF is the most in-depth article on it.

I would be interested in starting one, but I'm American and white so it might be too close to cultural appropriation.

Cultural appropriation is different. So don't worry, just conlang.
