But that's not a duck; that's a road-runner. (Or secretary-bird?)
(Wikipedia says seriemas are terror-birds' closest surviving relatives.)
My favorite fossil find is the one where the road-runner(?) (barely) choked to death trying to swallow the ancestral horse it had caught and killed.
(BTW they kill (or in the case of the now-extinct terror-birds, killed) their prey by beating them to death against the ground once they've caught them.)
IIRC The fossil was found in North America -- Florida, I think.
Horses evolved in North America, but already in the Miocene and Pliocene they were found in Eurasia.
Terror-birds were the apex predators of South America, but some of the big ones (apparently, so I read) lived in Texas and Florida.
Isn't it interesting how much their skeletons look like T. Rex skeletons?

I once read that the last terror-birds were dying out in Florida about the same time the first humans in North America were entering Alaska. But Wikipedia seems to say, that the evidence for that is no longer regarded as clear as it once was thought to be (although I'm not sure it was ever conclusive). However it does seem, if I'm reading it rightly, that there were terror-birds still living by the time the first modern humans evolved, even though if never on the same continent.

Anyway, I'd like to hear more about the pony-eating ducks.

Dromornis stirtoni was closely aligned to the tribe that includes geese, swans, ducks and flamingos.
Thus, their nickname "demon ducks of doom".
