Dromornis stirtoni was closely aligned to the tribe that includes geese, swans, ducks and flamingos.
Thus, their nickname "demon ducks of doom".
http://www.prehistoric-wildlife.com/ima ... s-size.jpg
It seems beyond unlikely any demon ducks of that particular kind ever saw or heard or smelled, let alone tasted, any equid; unless some of them made it to Asia and ran into something horsey their there. ( [:$] )
Nevertheless, given their size, isn't likely that people (if there were any around) might try to ride them?
(What haven't people tried to ride?)
So, they would have scabbed ponies out of their jobs, instead of eating ponies.
Maybe? [:)]

Either past tense of potential mood, or it is a conditional or it is a conditional potential.

Why do they keep calling it "the Final Fantasy" and then having yet another sequel? When is "the final 'Final Fantasy'" coming out?

But anyway -- you're right; chocobos.
Would the smell have been of decaying meat, them being carnivores and all? Would the Gysahl Greens maybe be the needles of the Bunya-Bunya pine? (Like hanging one of those little pine-trees from your rearview mirror.) I know those aren't particularly leafy, nor indigenous to "the Near East", but their range was(is?) near Dromornis's range -- I think.

The story goes that Square called the first game "Final Fantasy" because they were about to go out of business and knew it could very well have been their last game, but ended up being enough of a hit to save the company and spawn 968 misnomered sequels.

This always sounded highly apocryphal to me but I never really cared enough to check.

Definitely not apocryphal, it's the actual story behind the name of the series.
