Collaborative Conlang Evolution

Post by CarsonDaConlanger » 22 Oct 2018 00:09

So there have been a whole lot of collablangs based off of an evolution from a natural language, but how about one starting with a con-protolang? Would anyone be interested in that? If enough people are interested I'll get it going. (Or if you want, we could also set up the proto lang collaboratively or have several proto-langs and vote on one.)

If this one gets the necessary votes, it will be an example of a lang evolving from a con-protolang.

I like the collablangs dearly but since you need several peeps to get it going, I don't think there should be too many active ones.
The accusative of <emo> is <eminem>. :lat:

I enjoy voting on things, whether they go anywhere or not, so if this takes off, I'll likely participate.

Well, that's enough for a start, so how about our first issue:
What starting inventory should we use?
Here is Idov's idea
Here's mine:
/m n ŋ2 ŋw2/
/p ph b t th d k kh g kw kwh gw/
/ɸ s ɬ x xw h1/
/l r j w/

/i u/
/e o/
/ɛ ɔ/
/a/
/aj aw ej ew oj ow/
Hight harmony between /i u e o/ and /ɛ ɔ a/, diphthongs are neutral

s(C)(j/w)V(j/w)(C)

1 vowels followed by *h are pronounced long
2 no *ŋ or *ŋw in onset
Anyone who has an idea, post it and I'll add it to a list in a few days.

Could you give some examples of how you envision the vowel harmony working?

I was envisioning a simple(to start, since it is a protolang) system of progressive vowel harmony where /i u e o/<>/ɛ ɔ a ɔ/. Diphthongs are neutral and if there are no pure vowels, then a random grade is given to the root.

pan+i>/panɛ/
pan+u/panɔ/

pun+ɔ/puno/ OR /punu/(you'd have to memorize based on that specific affix)
