Anyone ever make or translate songs in their conlangs?

Post by Birdlang » 31 Jan 2019 13:34

I have tried to make songs in my conlangs, but it’s hard. I’ve translated some though. Has anyone ever tried to make songs or translate songs in their conlangs?

Absolutely! I find that obeying the constraints it forces on me makes conlanging much more engaging. Here's O Come Emmanuel in Boral, which I translated over Christmas:

I’ve never gotten far enough in my conlangs to make songs about them, but I want to.

I enjoy translating songs into various conlangs; trying to keep the rhythmic structure is a really nice challenge. It's one of my main ways of developing vocabulary.
Edit: Substituted a string instrument for a French interjection.

Songs are a great exercise for a budding young conlang… and older 'langs, too!

I translated songs into my conlang textbook, but they are presented as "poems" and hence shelved into those chapters as well as the past year papers, without concern for melody and rhythm. Though, this translated extract is singable, more specifically the 2nd paragraph within the story prose.

However, if one is talking about making songs, then I have a song entitled King's Arrival that can be sung with my conlang alongside its English lyrics. Here is a sample translation of my favourite part, which occurs at 1:58.
