Cyrillisation game #2

Post by Vlürch » 25 Aug 2019 19:35

Since the old orthographisation threads were deleted for some reason, and the romanisation game was resurrected, might as well have a new cyrillisation game thread as well.

Let's start off with a very simple one just to get the ball rolling:

/m n/
/p b t d k g/
/t͡s t͡ʃ/
/s ʃ/
/v j h/
/r/
/l/

/a e i o u/

And I just thought about posting such thing, so thanks!

/t͡s t͡ʃ/ <ц ч>
/s ʃ/ <с ш>
/v j h/ <в ј х>
/r/ <р>
/l/ <л>

/a e i o u/ <а е и о у>

Некст у꙼ан (Next one):

/p pʰ t tʰ k kʰ/ <б п д т г к>
/f v s ʃ ç x h/ <ф в с ш хь х һ>
/m n nɣ ɲ/ <м н нӷ нь>
/ɫ l ʎ j/ <лӷ л ль й>

/ʲi ɪ ɯ u/ <и иъ ы у>
/e ə o/ <еъ э о>
/ʲe ʲɛ/ <е є>
/a ɔ/ <а оъ>

Next:

/m n ŋ/
/p b t d k g/
/t͡s d͡z/
/s z/
/(j) (ɰ) (w) h/
/r/
/l/
/t͡ɬ/

/ˠɯ̯ɑ ˠɯ ʷu̯o ʷu/
/ˠɯ̯ɑː ʷu̯oː ʷuː/
/ʲi̯æ ʲi̯e ʲi ʲi̯ø ʲi̯y/
/ʲi̯æː ʲi̯eː ʲiː ʲi̯øː ʲi̯yː/

/kʲi̯æːŋʲi̯e d͡zʷumsʷu̯oːl tˠɯ̯ɑˠɯ̯ɑːt͡ɬ/
[kʲi̯æːŋʲi̯e d̪͡z̪ʷums̪ʷu̯oːɫ̪ t̪ˠɯ̯ɑɰːɑːt̪͡ɬ̪]

(Word-initially and after other vowels, vowels are preceded by [ɰ], [w] or [j] depending on their quality, but those sounds don't occur otherwise, so they're technically allophonic.)

(unfortunately Cyrillic doesn't do well with diacritics)

This is the phonology of my Crimean Gothic. Anyone wanna stab at it?:

/m n/

Crimean Gothic:

/m n/ м н
/p b t d k g/ п б т д к ґ
/f v θ s z ʃ x ɣ/ ф в ѳ с з ш х г
/r l/ р л
/j/ й in coda, otherwise use iotated vowels
/ʃl ʃn ʃp ʃt ʃv/ spell as clusters

/a e ə i o u/ а э і и о у
/ja je jə jo ju/ я е ы ю ү

____
It almost seems too easy, ... i threw in a couple of tricks to suit my taste. the unadorned gamma goes to /ɣ/ on the hunch that it might be more common than the voiced velar stop, which gets the modified version. i reanalyzed Cyrillic ю as /jo/. i also reanalyzed ы as soft sign + i, and assigned the і glyph to the schwa. i couldnt find a dotless i but if non-Cyrllic characters are allowed i could borrow Latin dotless i. Im not too happy with using ү for /ju/, but my argument is that it might be allophonically fronted, and therefore could be considered an independent vowel rather than a modification of an existing vowel.

____
I'll have my own up in minute.

Oyster:

Rounded bilabials: /pʷ bʷ w/
Bilabials: /p b m pʲ bʲ mʲ /
Alveolars: / t d n s l tʲ dʲ nʲ sʲ /
Postalveolars: / tʃ dʒ ȵ ʃ ȴ /
Palatals: / c ɟ ɲ ɕ j/
Velars: / k g ŋ x ɣ kʲ /
Labiovelars: / kʷ gʷ xʷ ɣʷ /
Uvulars: / q h /
Rounded uvulars: / qʷ hʷ/

All consonants can occur in the coda.

Vowels are /a e i o u/ in major syllables and /a i/ in minor syllables. Most syllables are major, and the minor syllables are pronounced with very short duration.
Sorry guys, this one has the worst sting.

Thanks. I wanted to see how someone else would have handled the cyrillicization. You are correct that /ɣ/ is much more common than /g/, in fact the latter is marginal and mostly found in loanwords, and I did the same as you here. I imported cyrillic psi <ѱ> to represent /θ/, mostly as a nod to Biblical Gothic. The reason I included the clusters /ʃl ʃn ʃp ʃt ʃv/ is due to the fact that I was thinking of spelling /ʃt/ as <щ>, but the rest did not have special characters, so perhaps it would be more logical to spell it as <шт>? I'm not sure about that.

Your idea for the vowels are interesting. I have been unsatisfied with representing the schwa phoneme, and I had tried е, ъ, э without really liking any of them. I'm not too partial to <i> either, dotless or dotted. Perhaps I might switch back to my original idea of using <ъ> for /ə/ and then use <ы> for /jə/ as you suggest (which leaves out yeri, but that's okay). For /jo/ and /ju/ I use the more common <ё> and <ю> respectively, and for /e/ and /je/ I use Ukrainian <е> and <є>, given the similarities to its alphabet already.

(NB next poster skip me, do Pabappa's inventory instead.)
