Favorite Phoneme!

Post by Ossicone » 22 Sep 2010 20:43

So, do you have a favorite phoneme?
And don't give me that "you have to look at the system as whole blah blah blah." I don't care.

I just want to know if there is one sound that you like or one sound that you always want to add to your conlang.

My favorite would have to be /ʧ/. I even like it as an ejective and I love spelling it 'tx.'
Need proof? Just look at my signature.

Is /!/ the click? I looked at the x-sampa page and it says downstep...
Is it ipa, but R is easier to type than ʀ?

Either /v/ or /ð/ (with /k/ as a really close second).

My favorite is definitely /l/. I love laterals. A language without an /l/ is ... somewhat incomplete.

/5 K d_l/ get the second place.

Probably /K/. From a diachronic perspective you can do so much with it.

/ð̞ ɤ æ n̥ ɰ/

Apparently no one here likes vowels.

/x/. I dunno why, but I always find myself saying it.

Also, /ð ç β ŋ t' ʒ ɾ/

...yeah. I'd love to create a conlang with that phonology, but it's so unbelievably implausible that I can't.

Personally I like /K B D G/ :)

But it never gets any more true,

That they all still believe in you.
Just one time.

I do, my favourite phoneme is /ɶ/, but in moderation. I'm also a fan of /ð̞/ and /ɰ/. I've also always liked the idea of labiodentals that arent fricative or approximants (ie. /ȹ ȸ ɱ/). Yeah, all the strange ones really. Not that I want to put them in every conlang I make, these phonemes are the sort that serve to make a language unique, and if you used them all the time you'd sort of ruin them.

Oh, and in the language I'm working* on now (my first) has the "nareal fricative", a fricative in the nostrils.

*"working" in this case means I've created an okay phonology, and I'm trying to make up a conscript, but it's not going so well. Most of the language is vague ideas that I just need to put down on paper, but haven't yet. I posted it over on the old board about three months ago and I haven't gotten much further, actually I've gone a bit backwards from there.

I'm going for /χ/ or possibly /ħ/

Oh and I meant a uvular fricative, not a velar one, but the font makes it look like a velar.

My favorites are a voiceless alveolar lateral fricative and a voiced bilabial implosive.

There seems to be a lot of lateral love. (lol) Especially for /ɬ/, which I definitely did not expect.
