What are you studying? / What is your job?

Post by J_from_Holland » 23 Feb 2016 17:38

Are you guys all studying linguistics? Or are you just using your free time to conlang and doing something completely different for work? Or something in between?

(I'm curious, as I'm considering to study linguistics)

I've been fascinated with languages for years, but I pursued Psychology and then Social Work in school and currently work at a residential treatment facility for adolescents.

I plan on studying cultural Anthropology.
I don't even know if I'll be able to find a job in Linguistic or (broadly) Cultural Anthropology in general. Seems like the kind of field where there is only scraps left to get.

What about becoming a lecturer on that topic? That's what I'd like to do later.

I abhor professional teaching. I want to discover things. I want to travel places.
I fell in love with the studies of various participant-observers in the field.

This was an option I was going for, but a) real life ruined that idea and b) at least over here, I think anyway, you have to get a masters degree (which involves finding funding) and then you have to do a PhD and it seems like assisting a current lecturer is a thing as well. I don't know if you need any formal qualifications, though. I never really had a chance to look into it.

Which is why I'm considering getting a double major in Anthropology and Biology.
Because, if knowledge in the field of Anthropology were a circle, I would envision that circle being completely filled out save for some small streaks.

I'm in high school, but my favorite class is Latin for obvious reasons. Independently I'm also studying Greek and Sanskrit. I have interests in English and history as well, but when I apply to college, I am planning on a linguistics major. I don't see how I could do anything else

I teach languages. [:D]

I have taught ESL (from High Schoolers to adults: private/ semi-private classes, EFL teacher certification, TOEFL prep).

I have taught :esp:(High School, and World History in Spanish in a very well-outfitted charter school) . I have taught :fra: (High School and private tutoring).

I am :us-pa: K-12 certified to teach :esp: & :fra: , and am getting ready to acquire my :lat: cert.

I have also privately tutored :grc: , :ita: , and basic :jpn: .

One day I would like to teach @ University, but I need solid, dependable benefits for me and my son, so it'll be HS for some years more. Plus, I would like to lecture while dissertating for my doctorate, whatever that'll be in (Linguistics? Classical Languages? Constructed Languages??).

When I do get to lecture, I'd like to do :grc: & :lat: , and audit lots of other non-European language courses. [:)]

Ah, one of the Wise . . .

... (who) go about collecting all the lore and stories they seek. For there are indeed collectors of all this wisdom. They seem, to all outward appearances, to be nothing more than innocuous old men, usually in their seventies or eighties, and often carrying with them a broom and a couple rags for dusting and cleaning. You, my dear Readers know the type! For you have seen them everywhere: pushing a broom in the halls of Parliament or tinkering away at some menial task in the field tents of great generals, polishing the bric-a-brac in the Emperors Cupboard or mopping the mead stained floor of the local popina favored by people who desire a certain amount of anonymity in their present dealings. Nobody pays them any mind whatsoever, to the point where they are practically invisible, yet there they are, patiently sweeping the same bits of floor, watching what is to be watched and hearing what is to be heard.

We can't really do that over here, I don't think. Like, we have set courses like "History and French" or "Linguistics and Slavic Studies", but beyond some freedom in choosing non-related modules and extra-credit stuff (couple people on my course took two modules of Arabic in first year), when you start university, you know the course you're studying when you actually apply.

So, for example, when I was applying to universities, I was also applying to do a course studying for a BA in archaeology. I could switch to a BSc in my second year if I wanted to, because first year modules were the same for both subjects, but if I wanted to switch subject entirely, I'd actually have to reapply to the university, reapply for funding, etc.

I think if I'd gone to Durham, I could have branched out into slavic studies alongside archaeology, but after that, every university I was fairly sure I could get into only did pure archaeology. I suppose really it's just about finding "transferable skills" or explaning away your degree with a positive spin if you can't get a job in your chosen field.

No you didn't...

I have a boring-but-well-paid corporate job. I have completed my studies years ago.

EDIT: I studied philosophy. I had a few language related classes but that's about it.

I'm a Ph.D. student in Physics; my job is as a student researcher at the institution I'm studying at.

Before that, I had started a Ph.D. in liquid crystal physics (which I sorta-kinda abandoned) and, even further before that, I was an English teaching assistant in French public schools.
And I'll dance with you in Vienna,
I'll be wearing a river's disguise;
The hyacinth wild on my shoulder,
My mouth on the dew of your thigh...
